Some differences between the two methods: PRK treatments were not effective enough above -8,0 dioptres and in cases when haze developed. With LASIK, even -15,0 dioptres can be successfully treated. The recovery period is quite short and causes little inconveniences rather than pain. Patients must be aware that the flap will not recover completely, it will be held in position by the epithelium of the cornea. Compared to PRK surgery, eyes treated by LASIK will have a weaker cornea, because the repositioned flap will not provide the same biomechanical firmness. The cornea may lose 30% of its original thickness, but usually this does not cause further problems. PRK eye surgery can be performed on both eyes in a single procedure. LASIK can also be done this way, but some surgeons advise two separate interventions, one for each eye. The second operation follows the first one in about 2-3 weeks. |
