Author Shares Personal Experience with Rare Morning-Sickness Disease

DECATUR, Ga. – Author Camillia Harris-Butler dispels pregnancy myths and shares her personal story in her book, The Good, The Bad, The Blessing (now available through AuthorHouse).

Harris-Butler’s nine-and-a-half month pregnancy was complicated by a rare morning-sickness disease called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which affects the mind and body. In addition to abnormally severe morning sickness, the disease caused her to suffer from crippling depression. Through her story, Harris-Butler hopes to provide hope for women who are suffering similarly.

“Hopefully my book could be answers for someone’s daughter, sister, wife, cousin, niece or friend that may be having the same symptoms and not knowing what is going on with their body,” she says. “I want readers to read and feel my agony and to help any woman that may be experiencing this rare disease and stick by their side and support them through this sickness.”

Harris-Butler also hopes to dispel myths about pregnancy, including the length of pregnancy and its simplicity. “The first misconception is that pregnancy is nine months. That is not true; you are given a 10-month due date and you can go into safe labor between nine and 10 months,” she says. “The second misconception is that pregnancy is easy and simple. In my book you will learn that every woman doesn’t become pregnant, give birth and have the same healthy, happy life (they had) before the child.”

The Good, The Bad, The Blessing provides a realistic depiction of pregnancy. Harris-Butler eliminates the misconception that every part of pregnancy is beautiful and gives women a realistic representation of what to expect, how to handle it and why it’s worth it.

“I want readers to not feel sorry for me but know that we as women alone battle this experience of bringing life into this world and it is not as simple as the books make it,” she says. “It is not the most perfect attribute in life, but definitely a blessing.”

Harris-Butler was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. In 1996, she moved to Atlanta where she completed an Associate of Arts degree. After college, she completed a program in real estate and began a career in real estate investment. She has also enjoyed moderate success as a model and entrepreneur. She and a partner opened a beauty supply store in 2002. She has since sold the store and invested in her own store. After working in the healthcare industry for more than 6 years, Harris-Butler plans to pursue a master’s degree in healthcare management. She continues to enjoy writing and modeling. The Good, The Bad, The Blessing is her first book.
