Source: http:/ (PRWEB) July 26, 2006 -- A 15-year-old Palo Verde High School freshman is looking at life a little differently after undergoing a landmark procedure at University Medical Center. Surgeons have successfully replaced Mandy Kemp's mandible (jawbone) with a full prosthetic implant. Doctors say a full mandibular implant has never been used on a human. Mandy was born with an extremely severe case of the rare defect called Goldenhar syndrome. This condition prevented the mandible, jaw joints, and other facial features from growing normally in the womb. The implant will give Mandy a normal, more symmetrical looking face.
"It's exciting to be a part of a case that is raising the standard for the medical profession," says Dr. Selznick. "What's even more exciting is seeing a girl who can look at herself in the mirror, and feel proud of what she sees." "Now that I'm in high school, if people are curious about what happened to me, they'll ask," says Mandy Kemp. "Kids are more mature now, but when I was younger, kids would call me names, and tell me to join the circus. I'm looking forward to being a normal teenager." * Note: Mandy Kemp is now recovering in the Children's Center at University Medical Center. Video is being provided, courtesy of TMJ Implants, Inc. On the video are pre-operative interviews with Dr. Selznick and Mandy Kemp, surgery footage, and close-up's of Mandy's skull and implant. Both Dr. Selznick and Mandy Kemp are available for individual interviews. Dr Jay Selznick Double R Oral & Maxillofacial 2551 N Green Valley Pkwy #305c Henderson, Nevada 89014 702-436-9090 ### |
