FDA Will Get the Ephedra Ban Reinstated by August
Jul 25, 2006

The Federal Appeals Court heard the FDA’s arguments to ban ephedra again last April. Ephedra diet pills had been removed from store shelves but in April 2005 a Utah judge overturned the FDA's ban sighting that the FDA needed proof that the herb was harmful if taken as directed. The FDA has not provided that proof.

Marietta, GA (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) July 25, 2006 -- Ephedra is still legal and the consumer can buy ephedra today. However, the ephedra ban can be reinstated without warning at any moment.

Who wants this effective product banned?

The anti ephedra propaganda machine is cranking up again. WFBO, a "major" public service radio station in Buffalo, NY, released a news report July 11, 2006, stating several inaccuracies about ephedra:

First, that ephedra was still banned. It is not. Ephedra is being sold by law abiding companies like Elation Therapy, Inc., in Marietta, GA. This ephedra product, Metabadrine, is available on several web sites like www.gorillavitamins.com. It is also available thru several retail stores, mostly in the southeast.

Second, the "news" article stated that methamphetamine can be made from ephedra products. It can not. But it can be made from pseudoephedrine, which is still legal and is sold over the counter in decongestant products. That is the product that should be banned.

The question is why was this article released now? There were no reports regarding ephedra either in research papers or adverse reaction reports in months, if not years. Judges are people, too. This news item was released at this time to hopefully influence the appeals court judges who will soon rule on the ephedra ban.

So, "Who wants this effective product banned?" Big drug companies do. There are dozens of weight loss drugs coming to market in 2006 and 2007. None of these new prescription drugs work as well, have as few side effects or cost as little as ephedra. But billions of dollars in sales are in play.

Ephedra Available Again, But For How Long?

Diet pills containing herbal ephedra and mahuang are legally available again, but the FDA still wants the effective weight loss herb removed from diet supplements.

Prescription weight loss drugs can not compete on a level playing field with ephedra weight loss products. The ban on ephedra could be reinstated any day now. Without warning, all ephedra products including Metabadrine will be withdrawn from the market.
