Finding H5 and N1 Influenza Subtypes in Mute Swans in the United States is Not Cause for Alarm
Aug 18, 2006

The H5 and N1 influenza subtypes found in mute swans in Michigan don't mean bird flu is around the corner. Don't be afraid until it's brought to North American by a person, not a bird.

(PRWEB) August 18, 2006 -- The United States Departments of the Interior and Agriculture announced that H5 and N1 influenza virus subtypes were found in two mute swans in Michigan.

During testing described as "routine," samples were taken from the swans by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
(APHIS). Laboratory tests at the USDA's National Veterinary Services
laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa indicate that this is a low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) strain of the virus.

This is also indicated by the otherwise healthy state of the swans. High pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 kills swans.

A strain of LPAI H5N1 has been found in ducks in the United States in 1975 and 1986. It was found in wild birds in Canada in 2005. It's known as the North American strain of H5N1. It's not new and unlike its counterpart in the Eastern Hemisphere, it's not dangerous to people.

"In any other years, this would be not even be news," says Richard Stooker, author of How to Protect Yourself and Your Family From Bird Flu. "Finding influenza in wild birds nothing to get excited about. I do object to calling this testing 'routine.' It's part of a large monitoring program that's looking for high pathogenic bird flu."

"I do support this government program. If high pathogenic H5N1 virus is loose in North America's migratory birds, we need to know that. However, when that happens, I still won't be worried. The time to be scared is after high pathogenic H5N1 becomes highly contagious between human beings."

"I'm not scared of ducks with H5N1 in their intestines flying into Alaska. I'm afraid of people with H5N1 in their lungs flying into JFK Airport."

Richard Stooker created a start to finish proprietary 7 Perimeter Immune Defense System that explains how to defeat bird flu at every stage. More information on how you can learn How to Protect Yourself and Your Family is available at the author's website and blog.
